This paper presents a laboratory prototype of a 3-phase 4-wire Shunt Active Power Filter used to compensate the source currents in an electrical system. The controller, based on the well known p-q theory was implemented on a DSP and determines the reference currents to be generated by a 2-level inverter. Some experimental results are presented and compared with computer simulations obtained with EMTDC/PSCAD V4....
Getting the attention of students has always been a hard task for most teachers. In this context the use of new technologies can be taken into consideration for giving the teacher new means to incentive his students. The tool described in this article gives importance to the opinion of the students for their own evaluation. Thanks to it a group of students from the University of Minho was able to post questions...
This work presents two studies to evaluate the power quality in two facilities: a diagnosis centre in a Public Hospital and a simulation laboratory with a computer cluster, together with a printing centre and the air conditioning equipments of the Physics Department of a public University. Both these installations require a high level of power quality in order to avoid productivity losses as well as economic lo...
This paper describes the development and implementation of a traction system, based in the utilization of a three-phase induction motor controlled by a Power Electronics Inverter, to be used in electric vehicles. This system allows the speed control of the vehicle, forwards and backwards, and also permits regenerative braking. The induction motor is fed, through the inverter, by a set of batteries. During the o...
This work presents the development and implementation of a variable frequency Power Electronics inverter to drive a three-phase induction motor. The inverter allows a user to control the speed and torque developed by the motor, as well as its rotating direction. The inverter’s digital controller was implemented with a microcontroller. The inverter is fed from a rectifier with capacitor filter, which is connecte...
This paper describes different types of parallel association of Shunt Active Power Filters, presents computer simulation models developed in PSCAD/EMTDC, and shows simulated results for each case. The control system used in the active filters is based on the Instantaneous Reactive Power Theory (p-q Theory). The active filters use periodic sampling as switching technique. Two types of parallel associations are p...
This paper describes a combined operation involving a series active filter and shunt passive filters for three-phase three-wire systems. The series active filter is able to minimize Power Quality problems like unbalances, harmonics and flicker observed at the system voltages. Another task for the series active filter is to damp possible resonances involving the passive filters and the system impedance. The shun...
This paper presents a shunt active filter with a controller able to dynamically limit the output current, which allows an effective protection of the inverter semiconductors without diminishing the active filter performance. The control strategy is based on the p-q theory expanded for three-phase four-wire systems and the power stage of the active filter is composed by a two-level four-leg inverter. Simulation ...
